QR Code vs Barcode: 7 Key Differences You Should Know

Not sure which one to use for your project? We compare data capacity, scanning speed, and durability.

1. Data Capacity

1D barcodes are linear and typically hold 20-25 characters. QR codes (2D) are matrices that can hold up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, allowing for entire URLs or contact cards.

2. Scanning Orientation

Barcodes must be scanned horizontally. QR codes are omnidirectional, meaning they can be scanned from any angle (360 degrees).

3. Error Correction

If a barcode is scratched, it's usually unreadable. QR codes have built-in error correction (Reed-Solomon) that allows them to be scanned even if 30% of the code is damaged.

4. Use Cases

Use barcodes for simple internal tracking and retail inventory. Use QR codes for marketing, website links, WiFi sharing, and digital payments.

Conclusion

For most modern digital interactions, the QR Code is the winner. For traditional retail, the Barcode remains the standard.
